The Blacksmith's Arms, Rotten Row, Coleorton/Thringstone – A History

by Terry Ward, Coleorto Heritage Group

The Blacksmith's Arms was located on what is now called Lower Moor Road, but the area used to be known as Rotten Row. Rotten Row was in the Parish of Thringstone until 1884 when it was transferred to Coleorton Parish.

The Blacksmith's Arms was demolished in about 1960 when the site was bought by Brenda and Arthur Wigstead who built the bungalow "Greenfields" on the site.

The deeds to the building were transcribed by the late Coleorton historian, John Crocker. The documents are quite complicated, but according to these the former occupants in order were:

  • William Gamble
  • James Bakewell
  • John Griffen
  • The Burton Brewery Company Ltd.
  • Francis Smith and by his will (died 08.02.1912) to John and Mary Bradford (later Mary Carter) of Coleorton. The Bradford's never operated the property as the licensees as far as I am aware.

No dates are attached to the above occupiers.

The property was later sold (11.04.1921) to Willis Rumley, brewer's agent for £1260. The next sale (06.06.1958) was to Brian Alfred Hollingworth, motor engineer of Anstey (died 28.06.1959). Finally, the property was bought by Brenda and Arthur Wigstead (21.01.1960).

Although the Ward family were landlords of the Blacksmith’s Arms for several generations, they never actually owned it.
