At the time of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee I was seven years old and a pupil at Viscount Beaumont School. The head teacher was Mr Haydn Williams and my teacher was Mrs Eileen Holdsworth, who was very nice, but very strict. My recollection of the big day was of excitement - mainly because I knew we were going to a big party at school. We had done a lot of assignments at school in preparation, such as drawing pictures of the Queen and Prince Philip (who I'm sure I thought of as the King), and making paper chains in red, white and blue. We also had to learn to sing God Save the Queen!

The event took place behind the school and I remember a sort of summer fête atmosphere. Long tables and chairs and everyone dressed up. There were lots of games for us, and bunting hung everywhere in Union Jack colours. I particularly remember sandwiches in masses, lemonade and Victoria sponge cakes - which my siblings (Amanda & Joanna in Mr Williams’ class) and I surely enjoyed!
We were each given a bookmark, a commemorative mug and a 50p coin. Not sure what happened to them, but my mother prudently stashed them away for us! … and here they are:
With memories and best wishes from Jonathan Oldham in Germany.
P.S. my big brother Nicolas was at Ivanhoe School and on an orchestral exchange trip to the Isle of Man and he was given a coin there:
