The Old Engine Inn

The Old Engine Inn was built sometime in the 1700s and closed its doors around 1904. It is now a lovely cottage named "The Knoll". It's located in a small lane off Stoney Lane which used to be known as Elverston's Yard where there were several cottages.

Chapel Lane which goes from Lower Moor Road up by the Old School Room (the original Methodist Chapel) now ends in a footpath across a field. if you continue over the stile you come to the Willow Cottage and then The Knoll and through to Stoney Lane.

The Engine Inn got its name from the Newcomen engine which operated nearby to pump water from the mines.
